Overview of Programs & Events

On a monthly basis, PADRE offers specialized classes which all assist in managing Type 1 Diabetes. Click here to see a full list and description. Many of our classes are taught in Spanish, which enables us to address the needs of those Spanish speaking families with Type 1 Diabetes. Classes serve children and adolescents from throughout Orange County (plus other Southern California counties). They are taught by the Diabetes Team of CHOC Hospital and include Certified Diabetes Educators and Registered Dieticians, as well as physicians and psychologists. All classes are provided at no cost.

In addition, the PADRE Foundation hosts numerous fun activities for children and families, many of which are listed below. The purpose of these activities is to enable these children to have a sense of normalcy and to enable them to be side by side with their peers who do the same things that any child with diabetes must do (test their blood sugar, take shots, measure food, etc.). Acceptance of their disease along with establishing a routine is mandatory to prevent the numerous complications a child living with diabetes can face.

SPRING:

PADRE Fashion Show: Annually, the PADRE Foundation hosts a spectacular fashion show. The highlight is a runway fashion show featuring the PADRE children, teens and professional models. This is our largest psychosocial event bringing PADRE families together while their children with diabetes are highlighted and applauded. For more information, visit PADRE Fashion Show.

Catalina Island Adventure Camp: This weekend is designed for youth 11-17 years of age who are living with Type 1 Diabetes and their friends. It is a getaway of team-building challenges, marine activities, diabetes education and a variety of opportunities for personal growth. Long Beach Marine Institute and their staff host the nature activities and a medical team will be monitoring all the campers diabetes control throughout the weekend. For more information, visit PADRE Adventure Camp.

SUMMER:

Surfing With Diabetes:  Every June our teens hit the surf at Three Arch Bay in Laguna Beach. The day is filled with beach activities, a bonfire, prizes, and surf instruction by a professional surfer. A great opportunity for teens to build relationships under the supervision of diabetes educated counselors.

FALL:

Riding the Wave of Diabetes: Receiving the diagnosis of diabetes releases a flood of emotions. Come learn how children with diabetes and their parents are Turning Stumbling Blocks into Stepping Stones!

Harvest Carnival: A wonderful carefree day filled with costumes, games, crafts, face painting, lunch and snacks. This event provides a fun environment away from an emphasis on candy, which can be a temptation during this time of the year. It is a fantastic environment for young diabetic children to realize they are not alone!

WINTER:

Annual Holiday Party: A celebration for all to enjoy, both families who have lived with diabetes for years, and for those who are conquering their first difficult year. Come out for community bonding, food and Santa!

Posada Event: A Christmas celebration in the Spanish tradition for those living with Type 1 Diabetes. Come out for wonderful food, music and company.

Snowy Nights: This is a semi-formal evening of dinner, dancing and socializing for teenagers 13-18 who are living with Type 1 Diabetes and their friends.

Family Winter Camp: The PADRE Foundation and Diabetes Camping and Educational Services, Inc. collaborate to hold a Family Winter Camp. Families enjoy organized activities, discussions regarding diabetes, snow sledding, snowmen building and a chance to get to know other families living with Type 1 Diabetes.
